The Pantanal in Brazil is one of the world’s last untouched tropical wetlands. It is an ecological paradise located in the heart of the country, covering 42 million acres in the states of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso du Sol and borders the countries of Paraguay and Bolivia on its western edge.
Private ownership of land in the Pantanal comprises 95% of the majority of which is dedicated to cattle ranching. More importantly, conservation of the land and protection of wildlife is of prime importance to the people who reside in this exciting land. This area is immense and covers 3% of the world’s wetlands. Within the Pantanal resides 600 species of birds, 350 species of fish, 135 species of mammals, and around 80 species of reptiles.
For photographers, the Pantanal is a refuge for iconic wildlife, some of which reside here and nowhere else in the world. For example, the Northern Pantanal contains the highest concentration of Jaguars in the world. The Hyacinth Macaw, the largest Macaw in the world, is found in the wilds of the Pantanal. It is no wonder then that participation in this tour is an absolute prize for photographers who want to visit this wonderland to capture daily images of spectacular and different wildlife.
